FLORENCE 10 Sept

Today we were treated to Michaelangelo’s David, the marble exterior splendor of Florence’s Cathedral, Giotto’s Bell Tower and the “Gate of Paradise”. However none of these compared to the splendor of the sales people in the jewelry and leather shop!
It is the right time to let you in on some the characters on our tour including a couple that I will refer to as “Mr and Mrs Middle America Living the Dream”. This couple were the sales person’s best bet for a hefty commission and they didn’t let us down. Mrs MALD (which translates means mould in Italian) happily modeled the glorious leather coats and manhandled the gleaming jewelry samples. Mr MALD (profession Lawyer) had his giant digital SLR camera at the ready to take copious photos and visibly puffed with pride when the salesman announced that his wife could easily find a job as a model in Italy. When our tour guide would make an announcement and ask that we hold our questions to the end, Mr & Mrs MALD would butt in on cue with a question! We also had a character that Ron called “Chicken Man” who looked just like the toy store owner character from the animated classic Toy Story. Chicken Man always got into trouble. He would take photos when he shouldn’t, sit on 500 year old benches when he shouldn’t and we would often be waiting for him to catch up.

Our second evening in Florence was spent in the beautiful country side at an old farm house that had been converted into a restaurant. Here we were treated to the best meal that we had thus far eaten in Italy, with plenty of good wine and terrific company. The MALD’s and Chicken Man sat on another table. However we were treated to a performance by CM on the way home in the coach which is not worthy of repeating.
