We traveled by train from NYC to Washington DC in comfortable and uncrowded business class. It took 3.5 hours. Ron, who stayed awake, really enjoyed the ever-changing scenery which included frozen ponds. I, on the other hand, really enjoyed the gentle swaying of the train on the track which put me straight to sleep.
Arriving in Washington and stepping out of Union Station and in the taxi to our hotel, first impression of the city, gorgeous. Very clean, neo classical and empty (when compared with NYC). We did see plenty of homeless people and in one park we witnessed a soup kitchen rush as the homeless lined up to get a serve of warm food just arrived in a van.
We were a little early for the hotel so we dumped the bags and went for a wonder. Eventually we bought a 48 hour ticket for the Hop on - Hop off bus. The bus tour took us past all the classics including the White House, WWII and Lincoln Memorial, Arlington Cemetery, Pentagon and Capital Hill in the distance.

Tomorrow they are predicting rain and so we will hit the museums.
