Cooktown Discovery Festival Weekend

Ron's home from work and we have a week to fill in. What better way to enjoy a break than take a road trip to Cooktown. It's the Queen's Birthday holiday weekend and this is the time that Cooktown hosts its own Cooktown Discovery Festival.

Driving up the north Queensland coast we pull up at the small township of Mt Molloy and book a room at the pub for an overnight stay. This pub is fast becoming a popular venue for Ron and I. Tonight we join a small crowd to enjoy a meal of roast lamb and Mark Lane who entertains us with his one man band. The CWA is running a raffle and we win two prizes. Ron enjoys a good quantity of Rum and Coke.

Saturday we travel the 239km to Cooktown on an excellent bitumen road. We are lucky to have found accommodation and after throwing our bags in the door we head back into town to join the Festival festivities. Our activities include a cemetery tour, grand street parade, 1RAR bank concert, unveiling of the Leopard Tank, Captain Cook meets Guugu Yimithirr re-enactment, canon firing, billy kart derby, a high tea and campfire yarn and fireworks.

We are very impressed with Cooktown. It is located in an exquisite location at the mouth of the Endevour River and has great historical significants for Australia being the spot that Captain Cook beached the Endevour for repairs and declared Australia for 'King and Country'. The Guugu Yimithirr people have given Australians the name Kangaroo. It is full of the usual north Queensland characters and we are told (though we didn't experience it) it is a fishing mecca.

After our stay in Cooktown we headed back down the coast to enjoy the hospitality of Reg and Robin. A couple of nights of excellent company and a good day on the water at Port Hinchinbrook was extremely relaxing.
