Athens - Day 2

The wind picked up during the night and I thought the flat roof of the hotel would blow off! (Our room is located on the top floor of the hotel). After a rough restless night we threw the curtains open to look at that world class view again and to our astonishment snow was falling from the sky. YES snow...not the building drifts type but snow all the same. Ron in his excitement rushed his new camera to the roof top deck and discovered very quickly that snow = freezing and that a coat would have been a good idea.

Walking through the streets of Athens to our first destination of the day the National Archeaological Museum, we also realised that our clothing was a little inadequate for a cold day in a snow flurry. Ron managed to acquire a set of gloves for 2 Euros from a street vendor and we looked longingly at the boots in the shop windows that we passed. Ron was keen to buy a three quarter length coat but I convinced him that he probably would only need it for the day and then not again.

The National Archeaological Museum proved to be a little dissapointing. Not because the exhibitions were not impressive but because there were not enough volunteers to main the rooms and there were many that were closed. The museum shop and cafe were both woefull.

We spent a warm hour on the Hop On Hop Off tourist bus which took us through the streets of Athens and highlighted points of interest. Braving the snow we hoped off the bus at Syntagma Square and popped down to the metro station to check out the archeoalogy on display in the station's foyer, then popped back above ground to watch the changing of the Evzone guards at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. We were so cold that we could not stand and watch for long but we did get the obligatory photos.

Eventually our lack of warm clothing got to the better of us and we headed home for a warm room. It continues to snow.
