Chillagoe Trip - Part 1

Saturday 22 January – After a morning of appointments, visits, telephone calls and grocery shopping, we finished packing the car with camping equipment and headed north into the eye of a storm. A cyclone was forming off the north Queensland coast but this was not going to stop me giving a trip to Chillagoe a try. For years we had heard others speak longingly of travelling to visit the town. Located inland from Mareeba (approx. 149km) and with a little bit of unsealed road, it seemed like the perfect place to start my long service leave exploration.

What was left of Saturday was spent tentatively making our way 2 1/2 hours north of Townsville where we had decided to stay overnight at Mission Beach. The rain that we hit between Cardwell and Mission Beach and, the swollen rivers and creeks along the way did not give much encouragement. Should the Cyclone decided to do it’s worst then we would put plan B into action including a hasty retreat south.
